A living area with an electric fireplace, connected to the kitchen.

A place to settle in.

Seating and the fireplace give the living area a focus. The adjoining kitchen keeps food, drinks and conversation close by.

A living room, kitchen and game room downstairs.

This finished basement brings living, food preparation and games into the same project. These are a few of its gathering spaces.

A nearly full kitchen makes preparation part of the downstairs space. The wine nook sits beside it, behind a custom glass door.

For your space: consider what you want to prepare downstairs and how much storage that calls for.

Finishing or remodeling?

Finishing
Turning an unfinished basement into usable interior rooms, with the layout and intended uses considered together.
Remodeling
Changing an already finished basement, whether the arrangement, storage or finishes no longer work for you.

Start with the space you have.

Tell us what you want to do downstairs and what’s there now. A few details about the space will help us talk through the work.

Permit requirements depend on the work and where your home is. They need to be checked for your project.

  1. What will happen downstairs?

Identify the activities that matter most, the furniture or equipment involved and how people will move between them.

  2. What is already there?

Describe finished areas, storage, stairs and access to existing equipment. Note what you want to keep and what needs to change.

  3. Where do ceilings and utilities shape the room?

Low areas, beams, ducts and utility locations are important to discuss before settling on a layout.

  4. Are there moisture concerns?

Share any known water entry, dampness or previous moisture problems. They need evaluation before the finishing scope can be settled.

Your basement doesn’t have to look like this one.

Does every basement need a kitchen or game room?

No. The Olathe project shows one combination of uses. Start with what would make downstairs useful to you, whether that is a living area, a place to entertain or a different arrangement of existing rooms.

Can a half bath be part of the project?

A half bath was part of the Olathe basement. For your home, discuss the existing utilities and proposed location as part of the complete remodel; that example does not establish what will work in every basement.

What if I do not have a layout yet?

You can begin with how you want to use the space and any concerns about its current condition. Include your city or ZIP when you get in touch.

A different look downstairs.

A finished basement doesn’t have to look just like the floor above it. This room keeps the ceiling exposed and uses lighting to give the seating area its own feel.
